The fetal pig dissection lab is a hands-on opportunity for students to investigate the internal structures of living organisms. This opportunity is a culmination of the curriculum from both 7th and 8th grade life sciences. Students are able to apply their knowledge of how anatomical similarities are found among living organisms. Additionally, they are able to explore the body systems and how they interact with each other to maintain homeostasis. Fetal pigs are used because their internal organ structure closely resembles that of human anatomy. This project inspires students to explore medical professions and creates a hands-on exploration of life sciences. Students are given real-life lab experiences that can be carried through to a collegiate level. They learn how to conduct themselves in an advanced lab setting and how to perform in a cooperative learning environment.
