This amazing novel will impact my class in many ways! I want to create an environment in my room where everyone feels valued, loved and important. I believe that many students are lacking basic human values such as empathy, respect, and kindness. I want to build on my classroom community. By reading A Fish in a Tree It helps my students to better understand those values. My students will be able to make connections with the characters in the book. This book will also set the tone for the entire year and we will refer back to it when needed. As we are reading this book it will also help build on the Life Principles according to Great Expectations. This novel will help the students to understand values that will create responsible and respectful members of society. Kindness and empathy are two words that I value and I want my students to model in every day life. We will also use this novel write letters to a character in the book at the beginning of the book giving advice and words of encouragement. Once we have finished the book my students will be the characters and write back to themselves. A Fish in a Tree is also a huge resource to study figurative language in a fun and engaging way. I believe this novel will profoundly impact my students academically, socially and emotionally. They will gain an understanding of each other and begin to love each others differences. My students will be more understanding of others inside the classroom and my hope will be that the students carry it out into the real world.
