I plan on working with Imani for my Native American unit, where together we will explore various Native groups through their music. I first worked with Imani at an Arts Integration professional development over the summer, and I knew right away that she would be an amazing asset to my class and curriculum. Imani’s presentations bring to life topics that students otherwise would have a hard time understanding the significance. With this workshop, my students will have the opportunity to explore and experience the cultures through their music, rhythms, stories (legends), and artifacts. Discussing Native people is an important yet controversial topic, so through this experience, students will gain an appreciation and respect for Native cultures. While learning about Native Americans, students will also come to appreciate the similarities and differences between these cultures and their own.
