Flexible seating options have been proven to pour out benefits for elementary students across the country. Some of these benefits include: the power of choice, physical health benefits, increased comfort allowing for increased focus, community building, collaboration opportunities, sensory input, greater communication skills, and fun in the classroom! In our classroom, community building and the power of choice are at the forefront. The purpose of the large area rug is to create a space for our daily Community Building Circle that looks different from the academic learning space: somewhere my students feel comfortable to be honest and open with their classmates and themselves as we tackle the needs of the whole child, not just their academic ones. Additionally, I am looking to give my students various flexible seating options as a way of giving them choice in their learning. By adding the element of choice, students feel heard and gain ownership over their academics and their environment. The real world is full of choice, and the classroom should be too.
