The 2nd grade can be pretty tough sometimes. Work with me for a moment and imagine you're an eager 7-year-old in my 2nd grade math class. You spend your morning learning about decagons and their ten equal sides for the very first time, you go to art class to learn about primary colors, you grab a bite for lunch, then scurry off to gym, and finally you spend your afternoon reading a fascinating book about Harriet Tubman's valiant efforts as an abolitionist. That's a busy day chock-full of new and difficult concepts! Physically comfortable kids can better embrace the mental discomfort that is inherent to the learning process. Now, try to imagine that same day, but you didn't eat a healthy breakfast and the classroom is really cold because your school's an older building and the heat acts up sometimes and, sorry, but that's simply out of your control as a 7-year old. Your already-challenging day just became a whole lot more daunting and you had no say in the deal. My school is an awesome place to teach and learn, and this situation does NOT occur every day. Nevertheless, kids sometimes lack healthy breakfast options and our old building's internal workings inevitably fail us from time to time, which is why I'm asking you to help us acquire some supplies that will counter these issues in the classroom. The NEA has published research suggesting that well-nourished scholars perform better academically, particularly in math; while a controlled Harvard University study found that classroom temperature has a direct impact on student performance . Healthy breakfasts/snacks, small heating/cooling alternatives, and a few flexible seating options will help make Mr. W's classroom an environment that prioritizes learning and enables all students to come to school and achieve success.
