Having two futon couches in my classroom will improve the learning environment for my middle schoolers in several ways. Currently, many students lay on the floor, curl up in a corner or under a desk for reading and writing workshop. They are searching for ways to get comfortable so they can relax and engage in their book or writing piece. I have observed that when my students are comfortable they are more attentive and engaged in their work. Engagement is a huge factor in student motivation and success in literacy. When they can choose their workspace, they are less disruptive and demonstrate improved stamina for work completion. Specifically, when writing, students choosing to sit on the floor use clipboards. Unfortunately, clipboards do not safely accommodate laptops. If a student chooses to draft their writing using a laptop, as many of my students do, they must sit at a desk. For many of my middle schoolers, traditional seats and desks are not ideal for creativity. They are confining and uncomfortable. Rather than sitting on the hard floor, the futons will provide cushioned seating and help create a positive vibe for our reading and writing workshop atmosphere. In addition, the lap desks will accommodate their laptop so students can get their creative juices flowing in the flexible seating area or in any work area they choose.
