Coming back to school during a global pandemic is a lot on anyone, but especially our kids. Some of our students are coming to school for the first time in 18 months and are very dysregulated. One thing we know for sure is that if students do not have their basic needs met or feel safe and secure, they are not likely to make academic progress. Helping not only my students, but any student in my building to regulate their bodies and emotions is my aim with this project.
Providing different sensory options for my students when they feel overwhelmed is important. The weighted blanket allows them to feel secure, whether they are hiding under it, or wrapping themselves up in a cozy hug. The trampoline will help our littlest learners, who don’t yet have the words to share how out of control they feel, calm themselves. Having the ability to jump to their hearts content helps to calm our young students, so they can do back to class and get back to instruction.
Sound stimulation can also add to dysregualtion in many students, especially those with disabilities. Noise cancelling headphones will help the students feel safe and calm in a more welcoming environment.
