At my school, the students are not given access to tablets for learning. I have students that are not capable of sitting at a computer to learn. The curriculum that we use for my special education students has activities that need to be accessed through a device with a touch screen. Having tablets in my classroom will allow my students to gain independence, by accessing the curriculum on their own through a tablet. My students in wheelchairs will be able to use technology without adding accommodations to their wheelchairs. Tablets can also be used to support student communication. There are apps that can be added to give non-verbal students a voice. We use a curriculum called Unique. This program allows my students to learn on a level that is suitable to his or her individual needs. The curriculum allows students to log in to their individual accounts, and work on activities that are suited to his or her learning level and IEP goals. With tablets, I can do the direct teach portion of a lesson for the whole group, and then allow each student to work on the activities that are scaffolded to their level. Having iPads in my classroom will allow the students to quickly access their activities without having to use paper and ink to create packets for each student.
