Having ample seating choices in the classroom allows students to choose work spots that are best for their personal learning style. During small-group or independent work times, students choose a location in the classroom that works well for them. My students are may choose to sit in a variety of locations in our room, such as desks, bean bags, tables, or on the carpet with clipboards. When we do our daily read-alouds as part of our literacy curriculum in the classroom, students prefer carpet seating. Throughout the day, the carpet is such an important space for learning and currently, I don't have a large enough carpet space that allows for this type of learning to occur. This is a struggle year after year as every school/classroom has different resources. Getting a clean, comfortable carpet will ensure students have a great spot to enjoy learning in our classroom this year and in years to come. Making sure students are comfortable in my classroom is an essential component in motivating them to learn. The carpet that I have selected will help my students by giving them more space and seating options to make more effective learning choices. The squares on the carpet give each student a space of their own, allowing them to better focus on the whole group lesson, or their independent work when they choose this space. I have seen how comfortable classroom spaces can impact student performance, and hope that additional seating options will help us learn and grow even more this year and years to come.
