A large rug will reinforce a love for reading in my students by providing them with a front row view of the book being read aloud. Sitting on a rug will make it easier for students to collaborate with their classmates, look at the pictures or text features, and stay engaged. Read-alouds provide many opportunities for learning. They are used in reading for vocabulary, making predictions, inferences, connections, and summarizing. Read-alouds can also be incorporated into writing by using mentor sentences for phonics, grammar, and even as an example of "exemplar" writing! A rug would also be a great place for morning meetings and an area for station work. My students are always so excited to share details about their weekend on Monday mornings, and we currently don't have an area for us to sit and share. Students also enjoy working around the room for station work.
