Manipulatives are essential to developing a conceptual understanding of number concepts. Children need to be given a variety of opportunities to practice and interact with numbers. Although I teach my students several strategies in math, I have noticed amazing differences when students are given the opportunity to physically count objects. Having a variety of manipulatives is very exciting to students and it helps to motivate them to participate and stay on task with their learning. They are taught that they must use the manipulatives/games for learning. This helps tremendously during group time. I am able to focus on my targeted group and the independent students get to practice their math skills while also working on social skills as they use the manipulatives/games in their groups.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive when they are provided the opportunity to work with materials that engage them in learning through play-like activities, instead of sitting and just doing a worksheet. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional opportunities to practice and reinforce their math skills throughout the year. They will also help to teach them how to be independent, work with partners, solve problems that arise with their peers, and how to be responsible with materials.
I currently have a limited supply of manipulatives in my classroom and I have seen how excited the students got when I was able to borrow some bear counters from another teacher. I want to be able to get my students excited about math and also be able to have highly engaging activities that will help the management of math groups to optimize learning.
