The recorder is often talked about with hilarious humor but with the right pedagogy, it can be utilized as a gateway instrument for my students to continue playing instruments in band or orchestra in middle school. My students will find so much joy in learning to play their own instrument. We will first learn recorder expectations and care, then set weekly goals, and play as a class ensemble! We will also be playing songs that we have already practiced singing in class. This makes the recorder an awesome tool for bridging these songs from ear and voice to playing on sheet music.
