As a first year teacher, my classroom library is limited. I want students to have access to a variety of diverse independent reading material. I want to supply my kids with books that appeal to them, books that are relevant to their own backgrounds and experiences, and books that ignite a love of reading! These books will be available for students to enjoy both inside and outside of my classroom. My hope is that these books will spark reading discussions and independent reflections, helping students to engage with contemporary middle grade literature. Having modern, culturally relevant texts in the classroom will help to further engage my students. Independent reading is a very important part of ELA, and I believe that these books will be a great starting point for my students to develop a strong personal reading practice.
