Students will have the opportunity to create a playground for a toy structure. This may include equipment such as a swing, slide and a merry-go-round. The building materials will help my students solve real world problems using addition and subtraction to 20. They will be able to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, taking apart and comparing. Students will use the engineering design process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve and Share) to facilitate the creation of their playground structure. They will build structures that move with gears and that do not move with gears. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their findings and make any necessary changes.
