This past year was my first year using flexible seating in my 5th grade classroom. I was amazed at the results for my students in every area of their growth. Allowing students to choose how and where they will be most productive in the classroom created not only a sense of responsibility and freedom, but also peace. With the implementation of flexible seating, students took the initiative to share and be compassionate with each other. They became empathetic to their classmates’ needs. It also created a collaborative space for students to freely, but constructively, move about the room and receive the assistance they needed from their peers and from me as their teacher. Flexible seating has been a total game changer for my students, our classroom home, and for me as an educator.
