​The major focuses of our ELA curriculum include understanding elements and structures of texts, determining central ideas, and analyzing the points of view of authors. Throughout the year, my students practice these skills through novel studies and stories in basal readers. I have seen them at times become frustrated and discouraged when reading an outdated text to which they cannot seem to relate. On the other hand, I have also witnessed that there is nothing more motivating to them than finding media that shares content that matters to them at the moment and takes into account their likes, passions, and point of view. My students will have the opportunity with Scholastic Scope to utilize the critical language arts skills they are gaining with current stories, articles, dramas, poetry and more. In a world of technology, it is more important than ever for my students to be able to read, own, and actually hold physical copies of current events. I can't wait for them to use this tool to stay informed about what is happening in the world and bring their ELA learning to life!
