I am in my second year of teaching a state-tested subject in a district with rigorous test prep schedules. Many of my students have not read a whole group novel since intermediate or primary school. Help me be brave enough to give students an engaging extended text. Long Way Down is a gripping story about a young boy experiencing loss and grappling with a difficult choice. At least fifteen of my current students have read this text independently, and one student wrote in a reflection that "I learned I'm not the only one in this world." That is what representation does, and that is an amazing thing! Instructionally, Long Way Down is a full novel written in verse (narrative poetry). By reading novels, students grasp common core skills like characterization, theme, and plot on deeper levels. Jason Reynolds uses figurative language and text structure to create immense tension throughout the book, and my students are in constant need of poetry exposure. I have seen this book do wonders on an individual level, and I am bursting with confidence in what it could do for an entire class!
