My students absolutely love to read. They are more inclined to explore new texts and engage in reading when there is an ample variety of books at their fingertips! Reader’s Workshop is my students’ favorite time of day and a high leverage literacy block for 2nd grade. During this block, students participate in a mini-lesson, independent reading, partner reading, conferences, guided reading, and reflections. Including my mentor texts, some students engage with close to 12-15 books in a single day! In order for students to be successful during Reader’s Workshop, they need 10-15 books in their book box at all times, this leveled library will make that possible. In addition to using these books during the school day, they will be sent home on a daily basis. Students will have the opportunity to "show off" their reading strategies and build good reading habits outside of the classroom. It is crucial that students are given the opportunity to grow as readers outside of school from an early age. Through consistent access to a highly engaging library, students naturally build stamina, expand interests, develop stronger reading strategies, and most importantly, develop a love of reading. This leveled classroom library will positively impact the course of my students’ learning for the entire school year and beyond.
