The library at our elementary school in East New York Brooklyn have 16 desktop computers which are used for independent work which often involves listening. There is a need for working headphones so students can listen independently and stay focused on their work. This project will make it possible to purchase 16 headphones to be used in the library. Each headphone will be attached to a desktop computer so that each child will have a working headphone for independent use. A working headphone allows each child to listen to the text or video without being distracted and stay focused on their learning. After a whole class lesson, I usually send the students to work independently on a desktop computer. They might be asked to complete reading an article from a non-fiction magazine using the audio to assist them. Students will also be asked to listen to eBooks of their choice on the MYON database or from the school library catalog. The headsets are sometimes attached to an iPad which are issued to students to independently work on learning applications such as Starfall and MYON. These headsets will benefit 16 students at a time during a class period however a cross section of the whole school will benefit since all classes have access to the computers in the library during each school day. Students come to the library during their lunch periods and open access periods to read a book online, watch a video, or read a magazine. Currently, most of the headsets do not work so this funding will allow all the headsets to be replaced.
