I've found that student's can focus better after having a snack, especially high school students. Also, when doing after school work, they often do not get the chance to eat something and are very hungry. Factor in sports practice or a club meeting as well, and they don't even get a chance to eat until about 6:00pm after eating lunch at 11:00am. It is important to make them feel safe and taken care of first if you expect them to learn and do work in your classroom. Providing small things like snacks helps students feel like you care about their well-being and helps to form that relationship with them.
