A lot of lessons are based from a read aloud. These books will give my students valuable lessons on kindness, empathy, and a growth mindset. What is even more special about these books is they will allow my students to see themselves in the world.
Every child deserves to see themselves represented in picture books. Having these books in my classroom library will do that. These books will not only represent their cultures and identities but do so in a positive way.
These books will also honor and celebrate people with identities outside their own. It is important that my students feel represented in books because they will feel acknowledged, empowered and engaged in class. They will know their class is a safe place where they and everyone are welcomed. Seeing other cultures or identities other than their own will give them a chance to celebrate and grow a love for all people.
Every life is valuable and it is important for me that my students learn this. These books are a starting point. It is my hope that there will be fewer bullies and more friends, less laughing at and more high fives, less giving up and more trying, less excluding and more including, less hate and more love. I hope to add more love, joy and kindness to the world through my students and these read alouds.
