Every student has a Chromebook in our school, but in order to maximize their potential for individualized learning, each student needs a headset with microphone. This group of students not only have different language and cultural backgrounds, but their English language levels vary from beginner to intermediate. Headsets will allow students to practice listening comprehension, pronunciation and verbal expression at exactly the right level for them, while also giving them the opportunity to choose activities and content geared towards their individual interests. Imagine the soccer loving intermediate level student working with a podcast on Zlatan while the beginning student practices common phrases with a video clip of a popular movie. When students are interested in the content, their enthusiasm for learning grows exponentially; headsets will help harness this excitement. With the microphones, students will regularly record themselves in pronunciation exercises, while also doing mini podcasts on thematic topics. Additionally, they'll be able to utilize all the features of language learning programs like Duolingo. Bilingual dictionaries are the final step in providing students with the resources they need to excel in learning English. Tools like Google Translate are an incredible resource, but students can rely too heavily on them, translating entire sentences without actively engaging in choosing the right words or conjugating verbs. As a result, a learning opportunity is lost. In our classroom, I hope to make bilingual dictionaries readily available for all students, helping them to be active learners who interact with the language, note parts of speech and practice constructing sentences with the correct word order. These are literacy skills that will serve them well in all of their classes and in the real world.
