Like most six and seven-year-olds, my students often get fidgety and restless when asked to sit in traditional classroom chairs. The traditional table and plastic chair offerings simply don’t meet the variety of needs in the modern classroom. I would like the opportunity to offer them flexible seating options that better meet their needs. Some of the seating options that will be provided with this project are wobble stools, traditional stools and sit-and-move cushions the students can use on our classroom chairs. I am also requesting dry erase whiteboards so that my students can have a suitable writing surface where ever they choose to work. Many workplaces are now seeing the need to offer their employees the opportunity for more comfortable workspaces. We all know how tired, unfocused and restless we can feel after trying to sit still for an extended period of time. When we are afforded opportunities to move while working, we are better able to sustain our focus and accomplish our goals. When you consider the developmental needs of such young children, they certainly require and deserve the same consideration. Flexible seating options can help provide this opportunity. Research shows classrooms that offer flexible seating options for their students have increased engagement and focus because the needs of the individual students are being better met. I know that my students will enjoy these same benefits when using flexible seating options.
