In our Library, we provide students with books to see themselves within the pages. Our collection includes titles with diverse characters and contains current social topics that allow students to better understand the world around them. Many students find comfort in seeing their situations play out in front of them on the pages, while others are learning to deal with difficult situations by watching the characters grow and develop. This project would allow us to offer a Book Club using Starfish by Lisa Fipps as a springboard for body image and bullying discussions. Starfish was recently named one of the Best Middle-Grade Books 2021 by the School Library Journal. Author Lisa Fipps uses her poetic novel-in-verse style to invite the reader into eleven-year-old Ellie's world. Ellie has been bullied for being overweight and, throughout this story, learns to develop a sense of self-acceptance. Providing an opportunity for students to discuss this book will have many benefits for our students. There will be students who can relate to being bullied, whether it is because of weight, learning challenges, or family situations. Through this work, they can learn about positive self-talk. Those students specifically dealing with body image concerns will see they are not alone and learn about self-acceptance. Finally, the project will encourage empathy and understanding by discussing the text and how the characters treat each other. While the project will provide 20 books for our 4th and 5th Book Club readers, it will also offer teachers the opportunity to use the book as a future class read-aloud.
