Audiobooks are a way to fully open up a love for reading in my classroom. Listening to reading enables everyone to increase their vocabulary, build background knowledge, increase their comprehension, and helps build confidence by being able to listen independently. A listening center would especially help the struggling readers in my classroom. Students who regularly struggle with decoding and spend the majority of their time focusing on sounding out the words become frustrated, because they retain very little of what they are reading. With a listening center, struggling readers will retain more of what they are reading, while also working on their decoding skills!
