Students deserve to be represented in their classroom's literature. I want to transform my classroom library to accurately represent our modern and global classroom. Representation creates a sense of belonging, allows all students to experience and learn about other cultures, and emphasizes that diversity is valued. Currently, my classroom library primarily features caucasian characters. Right now, I don't have any books with main characters who have special needs. To respect and engage ALL my learners, I want to honor their cultures, their family structures, and their exceptionalities and special needs. One way I can do this is by diversifying the books I have available for students to read independently. I plan to read one book from each series out loud to hook students in! I have noticed with this group of students, that one taste is all it takes to interest them in a series. Not only will these diverse characters help students see themselves in literature, but it will also provide a window into different lifestyles so that my students can be authentically educated about diverse backgrounds.
