We use novels to teach literacy in fourth grade, including vocabulary, word work, and writing. The students love having a novel they can hold in their hands and read. Their own book helps students of various learning levels as well. Some students may need to go back and read chapters over again, while some would like to read ahead in the books. There are many students who do not have books at home, so the books they read in school are the only experience they will ever get with a book.
