When introducing my science class every year, the students ask if they are going to be making things blow up. My response typically is "Not on purpose!" But in this introduction, it is very telling that students really WANT to be inspired, and in many ways that is what a good teacher does. There are times when I want to do a demonstration which needs to be both safe and visible, and the lab is a great place for inspiring students with the "WOW!" Student safety is a priority, and for this reason demonstrations by the teacher are used instead of the students actively participating. Examples may include conducting colorful flame tests; heating wax until it melts...and then bursts into flame; even lighting a match in a sealed flask placed on a hot plate pose risk to viewers. Yet these are the things that "get to the dinner table" at home and are remembered for years. These are the hooks for future learning, and reinforcers of the abstract concepts from learning about the invisible atoms interacting with each other. This demonstration shield will help students want to learn more about the science of the unseen atom, chemical reactions, physical and chemical changes, and maybe inspire another generation of chemists and scientists.
