We usually start the new school year with a theme and this year its “Changes.” We are starting the school year with literature study with this engaging book that focuses on its characters entering, adapting, and struggling with middle school. As if that wasn’t enough, an actual butler from London moves into the family’s home, with humorous cultural interplay as cultures and expectations collide. My students and I will read daily portions of the text together in class, break into leveled reading literature circles to study vocabulary, learn summarizing, discuss conflicts and mediation, plot, characters, setting, and the theme of dealing with the inevitable conflicts that arise and children go through these formative experiences. Each student will prepare something to share from this book, with their peer group, for each small literature group session. Writing assignments of different types will be based on the text of this book. Additionally, the chosen theme of “Changes” will be echoed in my science class as we start the year with the “SEED” environmental program in conjunction with Columbus Parks and Recreation, which focuses on visiting, studying, observing, and doing informational writing using new science vocabulary word describing ecosystems of four classes of local organisms, how they interact and depend upon each other-with a culminating informational portfolio piece due on how an Ohio animal or insect (of their choice) adapts to survive the Ohio winters. The books I’m requesting here will be engaging, fun, challenging, and thematically appropriate. They will become the property of our school, or course, and can be used for many years of study and subsequent literature choice projects. Thanks for considering my proposal. This is my first attempt to use DonorsChoose.org to enhance the learning opportunities of my gifted students!
