Our Journalism classes will read a chapter of "The Bookseller of Kabul" each week and then meet in small "Literature Circle" book groups, where they will pose their own questions about the book to discuss. This excellent work of nonfiction by reporter Asne Seierstad about life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, touching on gender roles, gender and class inequality, religion, and other themes, is a great example of writing on important, controversial topics. Our student-led "book club" discussions will later form the basis for full class debates on these themes of gender, culture, and America's role in the world. The students love this book and become so much more engaged with it than they were expecting, learning about the world, re-examining their own beliefs, and viewing America through a new lens. We currently do not have enough copies for all of our students! Please contribute to this project so all of our journalism students can enjoy this fantastic book.
