Each student has unique abilities and needs that make their learning experience their very own. Noise, seating, and lighting can often make the difference for whether a child is able to understand and enjoy their classroom. For students with autism, these sensory needs are often heightened. According to Autism Speaks, "Sensory integration provides a foundation for more complex learning and behavior. For most of us, effective sensory integration occurs automatically. For many people with autism, the process demands effort and attention with no guarantee of accuracy" (AutismSpeaks, 2018). For many of my students, under or overstimulation can lead to anxiety and frustration. Providing them with tools to meet their sensory needs is vital to their learning experience.
