As a middle school teacher to a diverse population, I see students from all walks of life dealing with issues from poverty, divorce, and identity, just to name a few. I have chosen high interest and culturally relevant books that align with each reading unit throughout the year to engage my students as well as materials to make necklaces using power words from the books that inspire them. With the books and the necklace making materials I have chosen, I will provide my students, during our Social Issues and Characterization units, the opportunity to reflect on their lives, characters' lives, and the character traits and words that inspire greatness. During these units, they will research character traits and inspirational words that speak to them They will then be able to make their own necklaces with these power words which provides the opportunity to have meaningful conversations about their lives and what they want to do for themselves and their communities to wear as a reminder of their who they are, what they have come from, and what they aspire to be.
