Did you know that reading in the target language helps learners increase their proficiency in the new language? It's true! In our classroom, we do things a bit differently than traditional language learning classes. My students don't connect with worksheets or grammar drills. But they do learn when their lessons and activities are personalized and rooted in what research has found to be successful world language teaching strategies. "People acquiring a second language have the best chance for success through reading" (Stephen Krashen, linguist and educational researcher). In fact, Free Voluntary Reading (aka FVR, similar to SSR used in many elementary classrooms) results in better reading comprehension, writing, spelling, and grammar. Unfortunately, many language classes still focus on grammatical drills and students don't get much experience communicating in the language through activities that are as realistic as possible. They also don't experience the beautiful cultures of our global communities. This project will help me to create an FVR library for my students using level appropriate reading material. The books each have at least one cultural focus, allow students to see language in context and students will be able to identify with the teenage characters and challenges in the novels. Students will spend a portion of class time reading their chosen novels and sharing with their classmates. Appropriate levels of support will be provided for students as needed. My students have been reading class sets of books as a whole group, but it's time to let them personalize their reading choices. I can't wait to get started!
