While my students are tasked with obtaining soft skills to achieve a life of independence, they also have instructional learning time to help achieve student-specific goals. In my classroom, I have set a goal of improving academic achievement, personal growth, socio-political consciousness, and access for my students. The selected items will help students to explore these four categories to reach our goal of independence, connection, and happiness. Often times, we put books in front of students that generate a single story: They don't exist. Students require a classroom library that represents them, their community, and their exceptionalities. The books selected include books that help with Social and Emotional Learning. In addition, OA's vision of holistic and individualized learning calls for a need for comfort in student learning. My instructional learning period is broken into cycles of work and activity break. These activity breaks include sensory breaks, leisure reading times, mindfulness sessions, shredding and many more. My students have proven to benefit from activities such as using a shredder as a stress reliever when they cannot communicate their feelings and emotions. It is important that students have access to items such as couches, bean bags, and rugs to improve enthusiasm and coping strategies. Effective break activities have been proven to help motivate students and promote happiness and independence amongst students.
