My school is in the heart of the historic Lower East Side of Manhattan. The majority of my students are either new immigrants or children of Dominican and Mexican immigrants, who are still trying to learn English and adjust to American Culture. Our school is small and it is in a constant competition for new students with neighboring schools. Unfortunately our area is being gentrified. The same block might contain anything from an expensive restaurant to a cheap taco stand, from a 99 cent discount store to an expensive high end custom-made Nike sneakers shop. Along with an influx of childless recent university students and young working professionals, there is loss of new immigrants and working families to other cheaper boroughs and distant suburbs.
