These literary and informational texts will give my students the opportunity to dive further into the topic of human rights throughout United States history and the world through reading. During our literacy block, we will read a text together and students will have an opportunity to read independently. These texts will be used during independent reading time for students to choose a high interest topic, practice the reading skills that were taught, and learn more about human rights and how they can be threatened. Research shows that the deeper a students' content knowledge, the more they are able to understand what they read, and the more they are able to speak and write clearly about that content. I want to give my students the opportunity to develop the ability to read and understand complex texts while also developing their own thoughts about human rights in their community and the world around them.
