Authentic literacy consists of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking! What better way to achieve these goals than having flexible seating?! The traditional desks often hinder students from experiencing the types of collaborative experiences we want them to have in the classroom. Seat cushions and a breakfast furniture set as flexible seating options will give them a comfortable space to work and more mobility to meet with classmates to discuss and relate to the topics we are discussing. Collaboration and discussion is where authentic learning takes place, especially among middle school students. Flexible seating makes this a reality as they are free to work with one another comfortably!
