It is my goal that my students will increase their reading by ten minute increments. When students increase their reading by at least ten minutes it increases their baseline words read per year by 150,000 plus words. Just like each student that comes into my classroom is unique, so are their reading interests. It is important that each student has books accessible to them that they are interested in reading. Book tastings and Speed Book Dating are two ways that I plan on using our classroom library to help students find a passion for reading. I want my students to spend time skimming and searching through books to see what peaks their interest and then spend time reading those books they find appealing to them. Book conferences will also play a role in our classroom library. Book conferences help not only me, but it helps the student with one on one interaction and helps me as the teacher foster a deeper relationship with my students. I want to be able to ask my students "What are you reading, what are parts that stick out to you and why, talk to me about your book". All these questions help learn more about the student - not just what they are reading.
