My students began the year with a crash course of the Engineering Design Process and are currently learning about heat energy transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation. We have books and I do supplement material from the book with a powerpoint, but I need help getting materials to bring these concepts to life. Through this solar cooker project my students will be able to continue developing their creativity and collaborative skills. These materials will make a difference in my students' learning because it will allow me to get them away from the book and powerpoint in order to bring these heat energy processes to life through their ability to go through the Engineering Design Process and create a solar cooker in small groups. The materials I have requested are needed for each of my small groups to be able to create a solar cooker to cook a hotdog. Pizza boxes are going to be used as the solar cooker. The inside of the oven will be created using aluminum foil, black construction paper, saran wrap, and tape. I have also requested pie tins which my students can choose to use on the inside of their oven as a receptacle to cook the hotdog in. Students will measure the temperature of the hotdogs by being able to use the thermometers. Using these temperature readings, they will create a graph through a computer program. This project will allow my students to be creative because I am able to give them the same materials, but they will have the final say on how the cooker is designed through collaboration in small groups.
