Our class seeks to provide students with real-world, hands-on opportunities for learning. This novel is relevant, timely, and in line with situations in our world today. In our turbulent world, students struggle to understand the problems facing children from different lands and of different backgrounds. By studying this book in-depth, students will garner a greater understanding and work toward promoting acceptance and diversity in their own communities. Coupled with a study of homelessness and poverty in their own town, this book will have a powerful effect on the three hundred sixth-graders in our school. In order to make the experience more personal and meaningful, each student will need their own copy so that they may do some reading and reflecting outside the school setting as well as being given opportunities to discuss the novel with family and community members.
