I will be starting my first-year teaching English as Second Language (ESL) in Boston. As a new teacher, I need some help to start building up my classroom. I want to help give each of my students the necessary supplies and materials to be successful in our classroom, while fostering a welcoming space. In addition, I will be launching a new incentive program to help improve class attendance. Many of our students work long hours or full-time jobs in order to provide for themselves and their families. As a result, students struggle with attendance and often miss a significant amount of school days. Providing these materials will allow students to not have to worry about buying school materials, and instead focus on arriving to school where the tools they need are ready for them to use. With a new attendance incentive system, students gain points for consistent and improved attendance throughout the week, month, term, and year. The goal is to encourage students to attend school regularly, while recognizing any positive changes they make with attendance. The points students earn for improved attendance will then be able to be redeemed for different rewards, like school supplies, a homework pass, books, a backpack, headphones, etc. If the whole class average increases by the end of the term, the class will also get a party! With donations, my goal is to supply my students with the necessary school materials and offer incentives that will help promote improved attendance with new incentives. I will also use part of the donations to purchase new fiction and non-fiction books at different reading levels to ensure students will have a wide selection of reading materials to choose from.
