These novels will be the backbone of our poetry unit. In order for students to analyze and write poetry, they will first be introduced to these high-interest verse novels which they can refer back to as mentor texts. Students will be given books talks for each of these books, and then make a decision on which one they would like to read in a group with their peers. These book clubs are designed to promote student choice and autonomy - the conversations and activities are led by the students and give opportunities to discuss difficult issues that children their age face around the world and throughout history.
