O. Academy just expanded into our own school and we now have the chance to create a space that we can call our own! Our students work towards building employable skills that they can use throughout their lives as independent and contributing members of our community. A campus garden will empower our students to be invested in the products of their work, and the functional garden that we grow will produce fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that can then be used in our culinary arts space. Research shows that gardening is an effective tool to improve our overall mental and physical well-being. Our new garden will serve as another location for our students to practice hands-on skills and increase responsibility by caring for and nurturing other living things. Gardening also encourages us to exercise and spend time outdoors, which increases serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, helping us feel relaxed and renewed.
