Tuning is a constant process for any musician in any ensemble. For younger students it is often perceived as an abstract concept too difficult to master. But it can actually be fairly easily demonstrated and perfected using listening and tuners. I teach all of my students how to tune "by ear", but another important way to learn and "see" intonation is to use tuners. Tuners tell a musician if they are sharp or flat on any note. With a full class of students trying to tune individually, but at the same time, it is important to use a tuning clip that plugs into the tuner and clips on the instrument. This allows the tuner to just pick up that one student instead of everyone around them.
Through the regular use of tuners and clips my students will develop an increased awareness of their own pitch tendencies as well as learn to associate that information from the tuner with what they are hearing around them. By introducing a whole set of tuners into my classroom I will be able to speed up the tuning process and also continue to reference the tuners throughout the entire rehearsal. As my students become more self aware of intonation, their music ensembles will continue to sound better and better!
