My dingy, bland, old classroom needs a complete makeover in order to become an inviting & comfortable place where learning can occur! Having flexible seating options will allow my students the chance to move around and choose a location in the classroom where they would like to work. I have never been able provide choices other than sitting at a table, sitting or lying, on the floor with a clipboard, or sitting in one of two small rocking chairs. I have found that giving students this choice will often encourage them to be more focused on their work. They tend to be more engaged & get more work completed than when they are sitting with other students at their desks.
The things that I have chosen for my new classroom will allow my students to have options about where to sit at different times throughout the day. The reading rug will give the children a soft spot to sit and enjoy a good book while the gray rug can be used with the wobble cushions. These cushions can be helpful to students who need a chance to get their wiggles out of their system while getting some work done.
I am hopeful that by adding these bright, comfortable spots around the room that my kids will be able to find the ‘perfect’ spot to get some work (or reading) done!
