Through the reading and discussing of THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl S. Buck, my students can learn about work ethic, potential outcomes of disparity, women's rights, and the importance of simplicity. Many of my students define themselves and others according to cultural expectations. Reading and discussing THE GOOD EARTH will hopefully lead to them questioning and deciding what their expectations are for themselves and others. By appealing to the basic needs and more lofty desires of humankind, the story of the characters in THE GOOD EARTH is accessible to students on various reading and life-experience levels. This novel will be one they never forget.
