Every parent wants to see their students succeed. For students with Autism, there are different barriers that need to be overcome. One of the biggest areas we work on in school is INDEPENDENCE. Independence is a foundational skill that allows students to succeed in and outside of the classroom. Independence can be taught in a variety of different ways. In my classroom, my hope is that they are able to independently do academic task on their own without the help of a teacher. Clear, structured independent work stations are created for each student to foster the independence skills that can be generalized outside of the classroom. Autism may be a label given to each of my students, but it does not define their abilities to be successful, hardworking individuals in our society. With the use of these organizational bins and folders, my students will have clear expectations and organizational tools that will help guide them through their independent work. Each student will have their own colored folders and a bin to help identify the work and the tasks that need to be completed. Each year, I have seen my students greatly improve in their independence. They are able to complete tasks on their own which will build the foundation for success in their future.
