Students will have an opportunity to read stories about real people and real experiences. Reading a novel from beginning to end and discussing it with their classmates and even friends and families! What an enriching experience reading authentic stories with diverse and unique characters and plots. In addition, the specific stories are appropriate for each grade level . The book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, for the fourth graders is about a real Chumash Native American girl who was left alone on the Channel Islands. It tells of her survival. This story also relates to California social studies standards. The fifth graders will read, Esperanza Rising. This book literary treasure about a young girl and her family leaving Mexico during the depression and settling in California.
