Studies show that flexible seating has many benefits for students. Flexible seating promotes health and wellness through moving; plus offering a choice empowers students to be in charge of their learning. During independent work times, students are given the choice of where they would like to sit and complete their assignments by what works with their learning style. Since I am a brand new teacher, currently my students have limited choices. I currently have the following choices: at their desk; sitting or laying on the floor using a clip board (I still have to purchase these); a community table; milk crates with padding on them that I put together; two round cushions (I have ordered through Wish but will take a while to receive). Making sure students are comfortable is an important part in motivating them. Studies also show that "Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD." Having these wobble stools will give students an additional seating option and lead to more productive students. Giving students a choice can positively affect their work and demeanor, thus allowing them to be even more successful!
