This project is for a team of three math teachers and their students in 6th grade. We (the teachers) all recently attended a professional development this summer to improve our skills in using manipulatives in mathematics to improve student achievement. What we found out was that through the use of great manipulatives, such as Cuisenaire rods, it deepens student understanding of concepts being taught and helps students make connections when learning new curriculum. This opens up a whole new world for students. As adults, we even had “a-ha” moments and made connections to our own math learning. I can’t believe we have taught so long without this valuable tool. By donating to our project, you will not only be funding three classrooms, but you will be raising achievement for middle school math students for years to come. Each teacher will receive a classroom set of Cuisenaire rods to use with their students. Research has proven that when we give the students the proper tools to be successful, they will ultimately rise to the occasion. This will focus their learning and make their math education more hands on. It is even great for students to work in partners or small groups, thus encouraging collaboration while problem solving. Common uses for Cuisenaire rods are for reinforcing concepts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, geometry, area/perimeter, fractions, and so many more. This will benefit all students, from the special education students all the way to the high achieving learners. The possibilities are endless!
